Frindle Book Club

All of the third and fourth graders are in a book club.  We all went to Ms. Chris and everybody got a copy of a book called Frindle by Andrew Clements.

The book is about a fifth-grade troublemaker named Nick. He is experiencing a strict and proper language arts teacher who understands what Nick is  up to when he tries to replace the word “pen” with the word “Frindle”.

All of us have to be responsible and not  lose the book. We’re supposed to read one to two chapters a week. We’re not supposed to read ahead because we discuss one chapter at a time and we make predictions, so reading ahead would spoil it for others. After we read each chapter, we have to answer questions about what we read and what we thought the chapter meant. Sometimes we look up vocabulary words we might not know. When we finish the questions and vocabulary, we go back to Ms. Chris to talk about our answers and discuss the chapter. That meeting is called a Frindle meeting. Ms. Chris makes us find evidence from the text to support our ideas.

I feel like it is hard work, but it is fun to read about the trouble Nick makes at his school. I wish we were allowed to read ahead to know what’s going to happen next!
